The song Bad Reputation has a more significant and deeper meaning that the average female, teenage outburst. The song reflects Joan Jett’s struggles as a female Rockstar in a heavily male-dominated sector of the music industry and highlights the struggle she faced as part of her refusal to conform into the patriarchal Rockstar mould. The lyrics were specifically composed as a rebellious response to the unspoken codes of conduct that are applied to rock artists. It was Jett’s declaration that she was not going to move on from her career as a Rockstar because of the rejection from 26 music producers and the sexist obstacles from the industry.

For my artist, the song Bad Reputation will represent the separation from societal norms and the journey experience by the artists as they find others, who have separated from societal norms. It highlights that others may be too afraid to undertake the transformation and so require inspiration from someone else to get them started. My artist will be their inspiration.

The music video begins with close up shot of Joan Jett's eye as she is applying her signature black eyeliner. I would like to echo this shot by filming the artist applying eyeliner from forward angle, giving the audience the impression that they are the mirror she is facing, instead of having the shot played on a television. This shot will be included in the narrative portion of the music video and will appear during the middle of the music video.

In the beginning of my music video, I will mirror this shot but adapt it slightly to fit into my narrative. In Jett's music video, this shot represents Jett's rejection as a female Rockstar by the conservative males that dominate the music industry. In my music video, this shot will represent the artists rejection from society and it's norms, which will ultimately lead to the development of the artist.

UPDATED NARRATIVE:

After extensive consideration, the narrative of my music video has been altered to be more reflective of the message that I want to convey and promote. The new narrative will be more connected to the discovery of Rock as a genre and the youth of the UK. If the plan is followed, the narrative will surround a young women discovering the Glam-Rock culture through adventure and a mysterious guide.
